Grand Rapids, MI – As the Chair of Alsame (Advocates for Latino Student Advancement in Michigan Education), I would like to issue the following statement about the killing of George Floyd by police officers in Minneapolis and its aftermath:

The murder of George Floyd, by Minneapolis police officers is an outrage and we hope justice prevails. We would like to express our condolences to Mr. Floyd’s family, friends and loved ones. There are many people of color that have died at the hands of police and we stand with anti-racist individuals and communities that seek change.

Alsame’s core mission is to advocate for Latino student advancement in Michigan education but our mission and values would be impossible to carry out without acknowledging that there are systems in place that work to stop underrepresented and historically marginalized populations from living a healthy and prosperous life. Our African American sisters and brothers continue to face injustice and we urge our communities to unite in seeking accountability and justice.

Protests have historically taken place and continue to happen because black and brown people continue to die at the hands of police with little to no change. Let us listen, act, and support our black brothers and sisters now and always. You are seen. You are heard. We are with you. #BlackLivesMatter #TuLuchaEsMiLucha

Sincerely,

Salvador Lopez
Alsame Chair
